Leg Cramps During Pregnancy
So What is Happening ?
So you are pregnant and nowadays you get severe leg cramps or spasms, and especially during your sleep? It is like someone is pulling out your muscles from all around and you are unable to bear the pain. And if you try to get up or move, the pain radiates more. Yes, this is something that most pregnant women suffer during those precious carrying months.Why I Get Leg Cramps?
It is during the second and third trimesters of the pregnancy, that most women starts getting a sharp injecting pain in the lower legs or calves during night. It does disturb the sleep and make you all alert of the pain in seconds.There are many reasons behind the leg cramps which may be different from person to person. As the pregnant woman goes to her second trimester, she would have increased her weight as well as the baby's weight. So the legs need to bear the increasing weight which causes the muscles to work more harder.
It results in more strain and pressure on the legs.
Also, the nutrients play an important part over here. The food supplements that is taken by the mother will be more extracted by the baby which can cause the deficiency of same in mother's body. It may be because of low Calcium or Magnesium levels in the blood stream.
Again, the nature of lifestyle may also be a reason behind your pain. If you are a person who sits for long time in your work or who stands for a long time, leg cramps may occur.
How Can I Prevent It ?
1. First thing is to ensure a proper complete diet rich in all nutrients. Try having a glass of milk every evening before your sleep. During day time, try to have as much of water as possible.
2. If your are a working person, do not sit continuously for more than an hour. Do take 20-30 steps in between. And after a heavy lunch, take a walk around which will ease you out to breath.
3. Stretch you legs, toes, hands and fingers every 10-15 minutes, try to keep a foot table under the table to keep your legs up for sometime. It will help in the blood flow.
4. If possible a warm bath before sleep may result in miracles.
5. Give a massage around the calf muscles and keep pillow under the legs before sleep.

If nothing helps, and you notice that you are not at all sleeping and cannot get rid of this pain, always do consult your doctor.
